Institution Description:

The Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, established in Krakow in 1949, is a research institute specializing in problems of technology and techniques of metal cutting, abrasive machining, non-conventional methods of machining, technical metrology, automation of manufacturing and assembly processes. The Institute activity is carried out in following areas:

  • scientific research,
  • development works (non-routine design jobs - constructional and concerning process engineering - requiring a scientific substructure) and implementation works,
  • materials engineering,
  • production of unique apparatus and single machine tools or small special batches of them, as well as technological devices, tools and tooling likewise measuring and testing systems - characterized by innovative solutions,
  • service in scientific and technological area,
  • certification of products and investigations for its needs,
  • harmonization of Polish technical regulations according to the regulations obligatory in European Union,
  • consultations, experts' appraisements and reports, training, scientific and technical information.


Project Description:

The aim of the project is the development of new thermoelectric materials and prototypical highly-efficient thermoelectric modules. The project is based on a new paradigm of abandonment of the commonly pursued goal of beating the records of the maximum value of thermoelectric figure of merit parameter ZTmax. Instead, this project concentrates on searching for new paths for development of thermoelectric materials with maximum averaged value of ZTaver over a wide temperature range.

In this project two original conceptions are presented: a) of gradient thermoelectric materials with controlled both Fermi level and band-gap (Double-Tuned Functionally Graded Thermoelectric Materials DT-FGTM) and b) of composite materials with Attuned Electronic Structure and Mismatched Phonon Structure (AES-MPS conception).

The project will be carried out by a interdisciplinary team consisting of PhD students and post-doc scientists (from the fields of chemistry, physics and materials science), specializing in theoretical calculations of electronic structure, heat transport modeling, base thermoelectric materials synthesis and construction of modules for thermoelectric generators. Strong scientific institutes: Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (Dresden, Germany), Institute of Pulsed Power Science of Kumamoto University (Kumamoto, Japan), Department of Physics of Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore, India) as well as National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS (Cracow, Poland) are partners in the project.
